Tuthilltown Distillery

For over 200 years, the Tuthilltown Gritsmill located in Gardiner, New York used waterpower to mill local grains into flour. The location is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2003, Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee purchased and converted one of mills into a micro distillery that is now known as Tuthilltown Spirits Farm Distillery.  They were the first whiskey distillery in New York since prohibition.

The Fire

In September, 2012, the distillery suffered a fire caused by leaking vapors in one of the stills. Fortunately, none of the employees were seriously injured. However, an estimated 100 of the 10-gallon casks were heavily charred. This eliminated any markings or labels that could be used for designating what was inside. Erenzo decided to set the barrels aside for aging and on the two year anniversary of the fire he decided to start the blending and bottling process. Only 2,670 bottles were released to the public!

Tasting Notes

It is a bourbon and rye mix that has a nose of sweet caramelized corn, spicy rye, orchard fruits of apples and peaches and a touch of vanilla. Taste wise it is noted as spicey with hints of peppercorn, lemon and finishes smooth with a nice earthiness.
