I would like to start this out by saying that I am actually a pretty big fan of coffee and I love the taste, smell and boost of energy that I get, but every time I drink a cup of coffee, my stomach starts cramping and I quickly regret my decision. My girlfriend Jesse who also has the same problem, decided to pick up a 1lb package of Guayaki Loose Leaf Yerba Mate from our local grocery store. Yerba Mate is made from the naturally caffeinated leaves of the South American rainforest holly tree. The leaves naturally contain large amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. We decided to make our mate using our french press but you can also enjoy it in a traditional gourd. To sweeten, I prefer to use coconut sugar, honey, or agave and then I add a splash of raw milk or coconut milk to make it into a Yerba Mate Latte. The flavor of the mate is earthy, smokey, and gives a boost of energy without the stomach ache.
Guayaki now makes a variety of Yerba Mate options such as, tea bags, pre-made bottles, energy shots and more. You can find them in most popular grocery stores and health food stores.
