4 Toxic Ingredients in Energy Drinks That I Avoid

Have you looked at the ingredients in energy drinks like Monster & Prime recently? Acesulfame potassium, Sucralose, Artificial Flavors, the list goes on. Many of these ingredients have been linked to serious health concerns including cancer. Once I found this out a few years ago, I started completly avoiding energy drinks until I found Nooma.

When it comes to staying hydrated and energized, especially while skateboarding, I have a few go-to beverages and some key ingredients I always avoid. Here’s a rundown of what I steer clear of and why:

Ingredients to Avoid

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

Why I Avoid It: HFCS is a cheap sweetener found in many processed foods and drinks. It’s linked to various health issues, including obesity and diabetes. I prefer drinks with regular sugar, which, while still a sweetener, doesn’t carry the same health risks as HFCS.

2. Artificial Colors (e.g., Red 40, Yellow 5)

Why I Avoid Them: These colors are derived from petroleum and are often found in brightly colored beverages and snacks. They’ve been linked to hyperactivity in children and other health concerns. I avoid them to keep my body free from these unnecessary chemicals.

3. Artificial Sweeteners (e.g., Sucralose)

Why I Avoid Them: Sucralose and other artificial sweeteners have been connected to various health problems, including cancer. Despite being marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar, they can have detrimental effects on the body.

4. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

Why I Avoid It: Found mainly in citrus-flavored sodas, BVO has been linked to serious health issues like cancer and neurological problems. It’s on the verge of being outlawed, which is a positive step toward healthier food regulations. I avoid sodas in general, especially those containing BVO, to stay safe.
